Day One - Awesome Action!
The first day of the event was a huge success! The boys and girls did their best to have everything prepared - the riders got their welcome package and information about the club, the judging tower was in the perfect place, cold drinks for the riders were next to their equipment and Collin Dixon was on the mic anytime he was not sailing.
37 riders registered to compete in the event and so some qualification heats had to be done.
These heats were like a warm up for the judges, the boys were showing their skills all right but the hard work was still to come.
One heat after another was sailed only disturbed by some that had to be rerun because of the changing conditions. But that was only in the beginning, then the clouds started to come, the wind turned a bit and the water in front of the club was getting hot!
One of the most amazing heats was number 14, Kevin Mevissen (RRD/RRD sails) fighting against Antxon Otaegui (JP/Neil Pryde) and Steven van Broeckhoven (F2) sailing against Normen Guenzlein (JP/Neil Pryde). The crowds on the beach got to see what the rest of the contest would look like. The 4 guys pulled all tricks possible and almost none was falling. Anyway only 2 could advance...
Final Time
The boys were fighting big time and in the end the final was Antxon Otaegui
against Nikolas Akgazcyan (Starboard/Gun Sails). The crowds on the beach were a
bit too enthusiastic and so Antxon was in a bit of a hurry to go upwind where
Niko was already waiting. Anyway the heat was amazing. Both doing perfect switch
chachoos, shakas and more...
After 5 minutes the decision was done and the crowd was giving a hand to both riders, who came in completely exhausted.
In the losers final the best two german freestylers met each other in a direct duel. Andre Paskowski (Fanatic/North Sails) had to go against Normen Guenzlein. Also a highlight heat in the single elimination
Waiting for the Wind Gods...
The last days of the VASS event were just waiting and hoping to finish the double, even just to start it but the clouds around the bay didn't allow the winds to start blowing.
Everybody that turned up had a great time and are looking forward to next!
Thank you to everybody involved for their hard work, and for putting on a fantastic competition.
